Maricultura

2017 Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. Mexico

The Maricultura Vigas shrimp farming laboratory is located on the Oaxaca coast. This project addresses the relationship between architecture and the specific technical needs of a biotechnology laboratory. Its main objective is to generate the necessary protective enclosure for the spaces and equipment required for breeding and raising of shrimp and other marine species. The strategy is resolved with a single gesture: a gable roof built with the minimum structure necessary to protect the technical equipment below.

This large roof with a very simple metal structure covers the entire program, which consists of symmetrically-arranged spaces with very specific uses: the maturation tanks are housed in two large areas at each end, between which a double-height space, supported by columns, provides the natural light and ventilation required for the tanks containing more mature shrimp.

In parallel, a row of closed and well- protected technical rooms are located along one of the long sides. The enclosure walls are blind to provide maximum protection from salt air and the sun.
