2021 Jalpa de Méndez, Tabasco
In order to revitalize the public life of Jalpa de Méndez, Tabasco, a master urban plan was designed for SEDATU, renewing three of the city's most representative public spaces: the High-Performance Sports Complex; the Community Development Center "La Guadalupe" (CDC); and the Recreational Park "El Campestre," annually hosting the Butifarra Fair.
The Recreational Park "El Campestre" has established itself as one of the main destinations for the local community's socializing and entertainment. With the aim of providing a venue for significant events in the city's life, a central pavilion with cross-arch ribbing was designed to create a sculptural public space capable of hosting fairs, concerts, exhibitions, etc.
The park's architectural design was conceived to harmoniously integrate with the urban context of the city, using materials and colors that evoke the regional quarry present in the balustrade of the main arcade in the historic center.
In the Recreational Park, the layout of universal access walkways and safe crossings was consolidated, along with the pavilion with cross-arch ribbing providing a sculptural public space. The arcade was designed with the intention of serving as a venue for significant community events: an informal meeting place, framing photos of public shows and fairs.
For the central pavilion, different sculptural sequences of arches and columns with iconic character were designed to provide the necessary infrastructure for the city's social and cultural activities. Hence, the annual Butifarra Fair takes place in these facilities, as the pavilion offers shade and necessary structure for selling and preserving local products during the event.
The design of the public space was intended to weave through the pavilion's columns, making the site habitable under Tabasco's rainy tropical climate. In addition to providing shade, its structure features a stepped concrete base serving as stands for spectators of sports events, offering a seating space and protection from inclement weather.
The Recreational Park "El Campestre" is a space that provides the local community with a place for socializing and recreation, fostering inclusion and civic participation. With its architectural design tailored to the region's climate, it has become an emblematic space in Jalpa de Méndez and a reference point for the city's visitors.
