2018 Jojutla, Morelos. Mexico
This pedestrian bridge is one of the projects developed by the Infonavit’s center for sustainable development to help the communities affected by the 2017 earthquakes in Jojutla, Morelos. The Apatlaco River, which forms a natural transversal axis, is a landscape feature that also constitutes a barrier for the community.
One of the main connections between Jojutla’s eastern and central zones was the vehicular bridge called “Los Suspiros,” which suffered structural damage after the earthquake of September 19, 2017. The project area lacked any previous landscape or infrastructure intervention; therefore, in assessing the community’s needs, the proposal was to create a connection between the east and the center of the city, which in turn connects two urban highways. The aim is to recover the section of the river with a functional work of architecture that reflects local and cultural characteristics, and creates new urban dynamics.
Flexibility of use is key. The bridge can be crossed on each side and over its top; alternating habitable perforations were also designed which can adopt various uses according to the occupant, from an open market, a space to read, or a game for children; all while framing the landscape.
